I’ve been writing a short story featuring Gwen Madden, the main character in my first mystery novel, Death on a Dig.
The short story is called In the Early Hours. Someone very important to Gwen’s stepdaughter Isabel dies and it’s not long before Gwen realizes it wasn’t motivated by robbery but something much more personal.
The story’s a week or two away from publication so I’ve had to think about a cover for it. But, of course, professionally designed covers are expensive, so I decided that for my short stories, I’ll design my own. Which means I’ve had to find some free software (Gimp has a good reputation), a useable photograph (I was able to use one of my own, especially shot for the purpose of this story) and teach myself enough of the basics to create something passable.
I’ve been phutzing around with it off and on for the past week or so, trying to make myself settle down and get to it. I finally tackled it today and it took me my whole Sunday.
What do you think? Does it look professional enough?
